How to Make and Use
Moon Water

The simplest and most powerful lunar tool

Moon water is nothing more than water that has sat under the light of the Moon. And yet, it is one of the most versatile tools in any witch's practice.

Moon water is exactly what it sounds like. Water that has been charged under the light of the Moon, absorbing lunar energy and holding it in liquid form. It is simple to make, costs almost nothing, and can be used in nearly every aspect of your spiritual practice.

You do not need special water or an expensive crystal-lined jar or a particular phase of the Moon to start, though all of those things can add layers of intention if you choose. At its most basic, moon water is water plus moonlight plus your intention. That is all it takes.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to make moon water, charge it properly, store it safely, and use it in your daily rituals and magical work.

What You Need to Make Moon Water

The beauty of moon water is its simplicity. You likely already have everything you need sitting in your kitchen right now.

A glass jar or bottle

Glass is preferred because it does not leach chemicals and allows the moonlight to pass through clearly. A mason jar, old pasta sauce jar, or glass bottle all work perfectly.

Water

Tap water, filtered water, or spring water all work. If you plan to drink your moon water or use it on your skin, make sure it is clean and safe to consume.

Moonlight

The Moon herself. Clear skies are ideal but not required. The Moon's energy is present even behind clouds. You will feel when the timing is right.

Optional: crystals or herbs

You can place crystals in or around your jar, or add herbs to the water for additional properties. This is not necessary, but it can deepen the intention.

How to Make Moon Water

Making moon water is a ritual in its simplicity. The process itself is part of the magic, not just the end result.

Basic Moon Water Method

  1. Fill your glass jar or bottle with water. Leave a little space at the top. As you pour, set a clear intention for what you want this moon water to hold or help you with.
  2. If you are adding crystals, place them in the water or around the jar. If using herbs, add them directly to the water or tie them in a muslin bag and submerge it. Make sure any additions are safe for contact with water.
  3. Place your jar outside or on a windowsill where it will be exposed to moonlight. It does not need to be in direct light the entire night. Even a few hours under the Moon is enough.
  4. Leave it overnight. The water absorbs the lunar energy as the Moon moves across the sky. You can speak your intention aloud, write it on a piece of paper and place it under the jar, or simply hold the jar and visualize your goal.
  5. Retrieve your jar in the morning before the Sun is high. Some practitioners prefer to bring it in before dawn to keep the energy purely lunar. Others leave it through sunrise. Trust your intuition.
  6. If you used herbs or non-water-safe crystals, strain the water and transfer it to a clean bottle. Label it with the date and Moon phase so you remember what energy it holds.

Which Moon Phase Should You Use?

Different Moon phases create moon water with different energetic qualities. You can make moon water during any phase, but choosing intentionally will amplify your results.

New Moon Water

Made during the New Moon. Best for new beginnings, setting intentions, starting projects, planting seeds (literal or metaphorical), and clearing space for what is coming.

Full Moon Water

Made during the Full Moon. The most potent and widely used. Perfect for charging, manifestation, divination, psychic work, amplifying any intention, and general magical use.

Waxing Moon Water

Made during the waxing phase (New to Full). Use for growth, attraction, drawing things in, building energy, increasing abundance, and anything you want to expand.

Waning Moon Water

Made during the waning phase (Full to New). Use for release, banishing, breaking habits, cleansing, letting go, and anything you want to decrease or remove.

Dark Moon Water

Made during the Dark Moon (the night before the New Moon). Best for deep shadow work, banishing, protection, working with chthonic deities, and confronting what is hidden.

Eclipse Water

Made during a lunar eclipse. Extremely powerful and best used for major life transitions, fated changes, breaking karmic cycles, and transformation. Use sparingly and with clear intention.

If you are new to moon water, start with Full Moon water. It is the most versatile and forgiving, and you can use it for nearly anything.

How to Use Moon Water

Once you have made your moon water, the possibilities are nearly endless. Here are some of the most common and effective ways to incorporate it into your practice.

Cleanse your space

Add moon water to a spray bottle and mist your home, altar, or workspace to clear stagnant energy and invite fresh lunar energy in.

Anoint yourself

Dab moon water on your third eye, wrists, or heart before meditation, tarot readings, or ritual work to open your intuition and align with lunar energy.

Water your plants

Pour moon water into the soil of your houseplants or garden to bless them with lunar energy and help them grow strong and vibrant.

Add to ritual baths

Pour moon water into your bath along with salts, herbs, or oils to create a powerful cleansing and charging ritual. Especially potent on Full Moons.

Charge crystals and tools

Use moon water to cleanse and charge your crystals, tarot decks, pendulums, and other spiritual tools. Wipe them down or let them sit in a bowl of moon water.

Drink it

If your moon water was made with drinkable water and safe ingredients, you can drink it as part of a ritual to internalize lunar energy. Set a clear intention before you drink.

Use in spell work

Add moon water to jars, candles, sachets, or any other magical working to infuse it with the specific energy of the Moon phase you used.

Offerings to deity

Pour moon water as an offering to lunar deities, water spirits, or any god or goddess you work with. It is a simple and respectful gift.

Can You Add Crystals to Moon Water?

Yes, but not all crystals are safe to put directly in water. Some crystals dissolve, rust, or release toxic minerals when submerged. If you are unsure whether a crystal is water safe, place it around the jar instead of inside it. The energy will still transfer.

Water-safe crystals include clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, moonstone, and obsidian. Avoid selenite, malachite, pyrite, hematite, and any crystal that is soft, porous, or contains copper or iron.

If you want the energy of a non-water-safe crystal in your moon water, place the crystal next to the jar rather than inside it, or use the indirect method where you place a small glass of water inside a larger bowl and surround the bowl with crystals.

How Long Does Moon Water Last?

Moon water does not expire energetically, but it can expire physically. If you used clean, drinkable water and stored it in a sealed container, it should last several weeks to a few months. If you added fresh herbs or flowers, it will spoil faster. Use your nose and common sense.

For moon water you plan to drink or use on your skin, store it in the refrigerator and use it within a week or two. For moon water meant only for external ritual use like anointing objects or misting spaces, it can sit at room temperature for much longer, especially if you add a few drops of alcohol or witch hazel as a preservative.

Energetically, moon water is most potent in the days immediately following its creation, but it will hold its charge for months if stored properly and with intention.

If your moon water smells off, looks cloudy, or has visible growth, do not use it. Thank it for its service, pour it onto the earth, and make a fresh batch.

What If It Is Cloudy or Raining?

You do not need a clear sky to make moon water. The Moon's energy is present whether you can see her or not. Cloud cover does not block her influence. If it feels right to set your water out on a cloudy or rainy night, do it. Some witches believe rain-touched moon water carries extra cleansing and emotional release energy.

If you live somewhere with constant cloud cover or heavy light pollution and cannot see the Moon at all, you can still make moon water. Set your jar out with intention, speak to the Moon even if you cannot see her, and trust that the connection is there. The Moon has been pulling the tides for billions of years. A little cloud cover is not going to stop her.

A Few Final Tips

Moon water is forgiving. There is no wrong way to make it as long as your intention is clear and your water is safe. If you forget to bring it in before sunrise, it is fine. If you only have a plastic bottle instead of glass, it will still work. Do not let perfectionism stop you from starting.

Label your moon water. Write the date, the Moon phase, and any crystals or herbs you used directly on the jar with a marker or on a piece of tape. Future you will thank you when you are reaching for the right bottle in the middle of a ritual.

Make moon water regularly. Even if you do not use it right away, having a stockpile of charged water from different Moon phases gives you options when you need them. Full Moon water is the most versatile and worth making every month.

Finally, remember that the magic is not in the water itself. It is in your relationship with the Moon, in the act of slowing down and marking the lunar cycle, in the intention you bring to the process. The water is just the vessel. You are the one doing the work.

Remember this

The Moon does not ask for complexity. She asks for attention. Moon water is proof that the simplest acts of devotion are often the most powerful.
